I think you're missing the idea that keeping a customer is at least
as
im****tant as finding one.  Here's your story as told by you:

Another way of saying this is that you have failed to generate both
repeat business and referral business.  You supposedly had paying
customers for five years, and yet your income was ruined when you
couldn't easily get new ones off the 'Net.  If you succeeded in
generating repeat business, changes in Google wouldn't ruin you
income; at worst, they would stabilize it...
