Greetings all,
I am new to this group. Nice to meet everyone!
I have a Computer Science degree and have about 8 years experience in
High Tech doing both Quality Assurance and Network Administration. I
am extremely interested in a career change and in doing my MBA (either
at the University of Ottawa, or University of Calgary). The question
I have though is in relation to 'paying for it'. I am 35 and (like
everyone) trying to save money for my future...yet I am in a career
slump and I really wish to get my MBA to open up new op****tunities for
me.
Here are my questions:
1) Given the post "dot.com" bust, do any high tech firms still
reimburse their employees or even partially reimburse their employees
for an MBA? For the folks that have successfully gotten their
employers to partially contribute, was it easier to get funding having
already been working in this role or did it make no difference where a
person was presently working (an MBA role or standard R&D role with no
business aspects at all)? The reason I am asking as I am thinking I
may have a better chance of getting funding if I move into a business
type role and work this for a year (assuming I can get the job without
first having the MBA)
2) Has anyone given any thought to an on-line MBA? How do they
compare to the traditional "brick and motar" MBAs (from a major
University like U of O)?
3) What is the average number of people that are actually 'using'
their MBA in their current job?
4) How is the salary? Does having an MBA massively help ones salary
increase? Recent magazines indicate anywhere from a ~40% - 60%
increase in salary with a MBA. True? Is that people's experience?
5) Most schools have a Part-time and Full-time option. Any comments
on which is better? (please comment both from a workload/stress level
and from a employment securement level once completed)
I look forward to your responses...and thanks,
Derek
