I think it's often forgotten that these weren't lame duck industries. In
fact it would have been hard to find a Merchant Bank to carry out the
floatation if they had been. When Thatcher started selling off the
family silver the Telecom, Energy, Rail & Water companies gave the
treasury about 10% of it's income. So all those profits they made came
to us !
So not only has the chancellor lost a good source of income. But now
many of these strategic industries are owned by foreign companies with
their own agendas (EDF). And of course that lost 10% has had to be made
up by increases in taxation.
Yes we've a lot to hate Thatcher for :-)
