Seems rather strange. Are you a Chip & PIN customer, or a Chip & Signature
one? I've worked with these readers (and the authentication servers at the
back end), and as long as the PIN on the card is kept in sync with the one
the bank knows (i.e. when you change the PIN at the ATM, a message is sent
to change the PIN on the card), there shouldn't be any problem. You should
be able to use anyone else's reader, as all the reader is doing is
pretending to be a POS terminal which is always offline.
