I've been taking rat poison, Coumadin, for seven years - too much and I 
can suffer bleeding, too little and I might get blood clots.  They 
stopped using Coumadin for rats because they bred immunity.  Now they 
have similar agents that work well and are not as toxic to other 
species.  As long as pet or bird does not eat a large quantity of the 
bait itself, it is very safe to use as with species specificity and 
having to eat very large quantities of the rodent, it is near impossible 
for the pets or birds to become poisoned.
