Oh! Places like that are where newbies just out of hair school go to
work.
You aren't going to make any money there, but you will gain experience
that
you can use in your next job to (hopefully) do better.

Your tip was more than fair. Don't adjust it at all. If you tip more
than
20%, there will be no incentive for those particular cosmetologists to
better themselves so that they can go elsewhere and earn decent money.
And
cosmetologists CAN earn decent money. It depends on experience. The
Great
Clips (and similar) quickie cut type places are starting at the bottom,
but
you gotta start somewhere.

I'm sorry to hear that. Really. Even if they aren't earning squat, they
need to understand that when someone pays for a hair cut, they are also
paying for human interaction. If the total experience is good, the tip
will
be good. I had one hairstylist who would give me a scalp massage while
shampooing my hair, before she cut my hair. She was so good at it, I had
to
fight to stay awake, it was very relaxing. I always gave her a $10 tip.
But that was for a $23 (later it went up to $26) haircut. Considering
that
it took her less than a half hour total to cut my hair (she was GOOD, and
fast), and that $10 (and higher) tips for one haircut for her were not
uncommon, and she was always fully booked, AND got a percentage of each
service she performed....
She was making good money.
And she got her start at a place very much like Great Clips. (Master
Cuts?,
something like that) But she understood that cosmetologist is a SERVICE
profession, and better service equals better money and better tips...
If your hairstylist wasn't very personable, he/she might never get out of
Great Clips...

No, tip about 20%, IF you are satisfied with the service. Only tip more
than that if the service is truly exceptional. A $2.00 tip for a $9.00
haircut is more than necessary. But if you feel it was worth $2.00, there
is NOTHING wrong with that. BUT, if you do tip $2.00, the hairstylist
should be grateful that they got a tip AT ALL. Many customers (especially
at places like Great Clips) do not tip, even if the haircut is good.
