Anyone experienced with rear end (differential) problems?

by Bax <bax2006@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Feb 1, 2006 at 07:37 PM

I've got a 1985 GMC Vandura 3500 Cube Van.

One day while driving I started getting a rumbling/grinding from the
rear of the vehicle.

I immediately tried to limp the truck home and managed to get her 3
blocks in the opposite direction when the rear passenger wheels
(Dually obviously) seized, snapping all studs, tires falling off and
dropping her ass on the ground.

Got her towed home and have finally gotten around to checking out the
problem. My first thought was a snapped passenger axle.

Upon inspection, the axle is fine.

My second thought is snapped gears in the diff.

A quick visual inspection shows nothing obviously wrong. No chipped
gears, no debris of any kind. Oil is dirty but, there IS oil.

So, what the hell happened? What's the problem?

I can't find anything to explain what happened.

Will I have to completely disassemble the diff to see the problem?
(No disassemble! No disassemble!) LOL

Help?
