Hi. I have a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. 3.1 litre. Has about 150k
miles on engine. Was running fine, then backfired 1 time as I was
driving it. Turned around and headed for home! SLowed down to turn
and engine died. Popped the hood and didnt see anything abnormal.
Tried to start it and it spun fast and slow erratically, then
backfired again. This time, the backfiring blew the vacuum line off
from the brake power booster.
Thought for sure timing chain. Not sure how to test, because its an
electronic distributer.
Pulled timing cover off and the chain hasnt jumped, but is very
loose.
2 questions.
#1 Should I be looking at the crankshaft and / or camshaft sensor and
/ or computer? or ????
#2 Is there a shortcut to putting timing cover back on without having
to drop the oil pan? (BIG JOB TO DO THIS !)
ANY help highly highly appreciated. Its getting too cold here in
Minnesota to ride my bike !
