Not on the beginning. When he joined the movement, Robespierre entered as
a
lawyer to protect the people. His goal were noble. Even as leader in the
beginning he was quite tolerant, decent and occasionally he even opposed
the nuts Marat.
But as much he stayed in (unchecked, unchallenged) power he changed. Until
he started to believe that he is the best, he have the right to change
others at his own unchecked will and have the right to use any means to
achieve that. In the end, he become even worst than Marat.
That is: POWER CHANGE PEOPLE. TOO MUCH POWER CHANGE PEOPLE IN EVIL !!!
This is a testament for the superiority of democracy compared with any
other
system. The democracy (if 100% functional) delegate to elected officials a
dispersed power and they are always accountable. Anything that interfere
with the functionality of democracy: cor****ate money, private lobby,
corruption, propaganda, extended powers, warrantless wiretapping etc... it
is an op****tunity to fabricate tyrants.
