Pentagon closes controversial intelligence unit
Monday, 04 August 2008 18:43

The Pentagon on Monday said it was closing a controversial intelligence
office that had raised concerns about domestic spying by the military
after the September 11 attacks.

Lawmakers and civil liberties advocates criticized the office in 2005
for collecting and retaining information about U.S. antiwar protesters
including Quakers.

Move over Freud: Psychiatrists embrace pill power
Monday, 04 August 2008 18:39

Psychiatrists in the United States are trading in the analysis couch for
a prescription pad, according to a study released on Monday that found
fewer psychiatrists offer psychotherapy.

The ****ft to briefer visits for medication management, re****ted in the
Archives of General Psychiatry, appears to be linked to better
psychiatric drugs and pressure from managed care companies, which offer
richer financial incentives for brief office visits.

Monday, 04 August 2008 18:03

Parents looking for healthy meal choices for their children are likely
to find slim pickings on the menus of the nation's top restaurant
chains, according to a re****t released Monday by a nonprofit public
health group. Nearly every possible combination of the children's meals
at Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, Sonic, Jack in the Box, and
Chick-fil-A are too high in calories.

Iran gets its own way and delays nuclear discussion
Monday, 04 August 2008 17:36

Iran has achieved, yet again, what it wants: paralysis of the
international wrangling over its nuclear programme while avoiding
outright confrontation with the US or Europe. It may not be able to
escape another round of United Nations sanctions before the US
presidential elections in November.

Anthrax Evidence Called Mostly Cir***stantial
Monday, 04 August 2008 17:31

The evidence amassed by F.B.I. investigators against Dr. Bruce E. Ivins,
the Army scientist who killed himself last week after learning that he
was likely to be charged in the anthrax letter attacks of 2001, was
largely cir***stantial, and a grand jury in Wa****ngton was planning to
hear several more weeks of testimony before issuing an indictment, a
person who has been briefed on the investigation said on Sunday.

Honoring Helen Thomas
Monday, 04 August 2008 17:02

Helen Thomas, the grande dame of the White House press corps, turns 88
today. That's cause for celebration. But sadly, the woman who got her
first re****ting job four years before the current president was born —
and who has been performing enhanced interrogations on him and his press
secretaries for the last seven years — has not yet reappeared in the
briefing room since she became ill in May.

Kosher slaughterhouse owners surrounded by scandal
Monday, 04 August 2008 15:04

Two decades ago, the Rubashkin family of Brooklyn opened up a kosher
slaughterhouse amid the cornfields of Iowa - not exactly a center of
Jewish culture.

The family's Iowa business, Agriprocessors, the nation's biggest
supplier of kosher meat, was raided by U.S. immigration agents in May.
Nearly 400 workers, mostly Guatemalans, were swept up and jailed and are
likely to be de****ted as illegal immigrants. Labor organizers and
workers have also accused the company of exploiting its employees,
tolerating abusive behavior by managers and illegally hiring teenagers
to work on the factory floor.

Drug Companies Exaggerate Benefits of Osteo****osis Drugs to Women
Monday, 04 August 2008 10:35

Studies published by drug companies exaggerate the benefit of
osteo****osis drugs to women who do not have the disease, according to a
re****t published in the journal BMJ.

Drug companies attempt to erase the distinction between osteo****osis and
pre-osteo****osis, also known as osteopenia, the re****t said. But because
the risk of fractures is so low in patients with osteopenia, they do not
actually need drugs and may needlessly be exposed to potentially
dangerous side effects.

Approximately half of all women have symptoms of osteopenia, the re****t
says. Osteo****osis drugs are now officially being marketed to this
population in Europe.

Brazilian minister threatens court action on US subsidies: re****t
Monday, 04 August 2008 09:36

Brazil is prepared to hit the United States with court action over its
farm subsidies following the collapse of world trade talks, Foreign
Minister Celso Amorim told the Financial Times newspaper.

The Latin American giant would rather not take action against Wa****ngton
over what it says are illegal subsidies and other trade barriers, Amorim
told the British business daily, in an interview published Monday.

However, since Tuesday's collapse of the Doha round of World Trade
Organization (WTO) talks in Geneva, it was now the only option, he said.

In June, a WTO panel upheld a Brazilian complaint that the US breached
trade rules over its subsidies for cotton farmers. Brasilia could to
seek more than one billion dollars (640 million euros) in retaliatory
sanctions.
