Noise From a Boiler in a Wardrobe

by "Matt" <mattb95@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Oct 25, 2006 at 07:57 AM

Hi guys. I've been reading through some of the posts in this group and
I'm hopeful that your expertise may be able to help me out.

I've recently moved into a new rented property with some friends.
Unfortunately, my room has the added feature of a hot water boiler in
the wardrobe, which is becoming a real nuisance.

Aside from the obvious noise coming from the boiler when it is running
to provide hot water and central heating, the fan in the boiler runs
constantly. Sadly, the landlord is insistent that this is how it should

be and that the boiler will not be moved. As I'm sure you can imagine,
sleeping and studying in my room is rather difficult without ear plugs
(or impossible when the boiler is actually running), which all in all
are making life very difficult for me.

I have thought about sound proofing the wardrobe door. However, there
are currently two air vents in the door which are essential, so I'm
wondering if this will make any soundproofing worthless?

I have also considered using the fact that my room is on an outside
wall to knock a hole in the outside wall and put the vents there
instead, allowing me to cover the whole door with sound insulation.
However, I quickly realised that this will subject me to much more
noise from outside and make the room a lot colder during the winter.

I have put the idea of soundproofing to my landlord and he has no
problem with it, as long as the vents aren't covered (which is probably

in my best interests anyway).

Basically, does anyone have any other ideas? Is soundproofing the door
(except for the vents) and surrounding walls likely to make a
noticeable difference? The noise itself is quite low in pitch, and
there is also a sort of occasional bang when the hot water tap is
turned on. The 24/7 fan noise is my main concern so that I can enjoy an

undisturbed night of sleep so hopefully that makes the problem a bit
easier.

Kind Regards,

Matt
